The legend that is Ray Charles would have been celebrating his 86th today.
Ray was born in Greenville, Florida as Ray Charles Robinson – son of Bailey Robinson and Aretha Williams. Ray was known for his incredible talent sat at his piano and creating amazing, cathartic and soulful music when he was in fact completely blind. However he was not born with his condition. It is said that the reason for Charles’s blindness was a case of glaucoma. At the young age of around four or five Charles began to lose his sight after witnessing the death of his younger brother George who drowned in Aretha’s laundry tub.
With digital pianos you have the fantastic option of getting wonderfully jazzy this Christmas. You can play anything you like on a jazz organ or electric piano setting (available on pretty much every digital piano ever made) and it will sound gloriously jazzy. Even if you play a bit of The Beatles, in a rigid 4/4, adding some E-Piano to your playing will give it that smooth edge that everyone is after on those long December nights in front of the open log fire!!
This week in piano news, something somewhat unexpected has happened. A rapper from a group called Goldie Lookin Chain has written a 17-track album called Piano Solos under the name ‘Rhys from GLC’.
