The RNCM (Royal Northern College of Music) Popular Music Department have awarded Pete Waterman with a fellowship for his contribution to pop.
The fellowship has been awarded due to his great success in selling over 500 million records and also secured over 100 UK top 40 hits.
The RNCM will now have the privilege in having Waterman deliver top quality master classes on its new four year BMus Pop Music Degree.
Pete’s musical career started as a choir boy singing in churches, he eventually started his own singing groups earning half a crown for singing hymns at numerous weddings during one day due to the bikes he bought for his ensemble so they were able to travel around faster and further!
Waterman in the 80s had a successful hit with Donna Summer’s ‘This Time I Know it’s For Real’. Throughout the 80s he also reminisces about Castlefield Chapel Studios in Manchester and fondly remembers nights in the Hacienda – One of Manchester’s most well-known clubs.
This opportunity for these young students who aspire to be successful musicians will be highly beneficial as Pete Waterman already has an insight to the music industry himself. He stated to the RNCM students “If you go into this thinking you’re going to be made a millionaire – forget it,” he says, “it doesn’t work like that.”
Young students in the RNCM studying on the Popular Music Course have access to high-tech instruments all throughout the day. There are many studios packed with digital pianos and composing equipment ready for them whenever they desire to use them. Students use the digital piano extremely often, especially portable electric pianos as they are able to transport these around the Manchester area to gain exposure from their performances. Brands that are available to the RNCM are brands such as Yamaha. RNCM also has the added bonus of being so close to Chase Music where digital pianos sell every single day due to our high demand. We sell even piano stools, piano benches and for the more top class performances we take pride in our digital grand piano.
