Piano playing robot stuns with Stevie Wonder recital

Technology has come on in leaps and bounds over the past century. We recently saw a self-playing piano in the streets of Cambridge. Now, however, we have an  actual robot pianist.

playing a fine tune – robot piano recites Stevie Wonder classic.

The SamuMetal tools and technology show, a reference trade show in the tools and technology sector for metal workings in the Pordenone province, in Italy was the location. Posted on Instagram, this delightful yet brief 50 second video shows robot hands playing a rendition of Stevie Wonder’s 1984 hit single “I just called to say I love you”, on a digital piano.

Not much more is known about this ivory-tickling tech, other than that the music they play – in this case, Stevie Wonder- is pre-programmed, and the robots specially designed rotors are used to move their “fingers” up and down in order to hit the right keys for the song.

If a key is out of reach? A lineral motor is used to move the hand to the exact position of that far-out key. As this really is far-out technology.

It’s not clear wether the piano the robot’s jamming is a Yamaha, a Chase or a Casio, or any other type, all we do know is, technology really is incredible, and musical too.
