When it comes to top-selling records this lady comes first on the list. Academy’s, Emmy’s, Grammy’s and Oscars – you name it – she’s won it. And that’s no bull! Born in April 1942 Barbra Streisand sits squarely in the bullring as a Taurus with her feisty, often ‘bullish’ independence. Renowned as a powerful ‘belter’ Streisands romantic ballads have reached the hearts of millions world-wide and have been published mainly for digital piano with vocals.
A Little Belter
Streisands singing career took off in the 1960s as she twinned with fellow celebrated artists including Judy Garland and Ethel Merman. Garland referred to Streisand’s powerful projection as one of last great belters as she duetted such repertoire as ‘There’s No Business Like Show Business’.
At the onset Streisand’s repertoire veered towards the safe and heart-rending film-based ballads that steered away from pop and rock. Later however Streisand became more mainstream as she explored additional genres and did so successfully.
‘The Way We Were’ with Barbra Streisand
This 1973 film was to be Streisand’s trademark of the same title starred Streisand and Robert Redford about the broken relationship of two once-lovers. As a pop track it flew to the top of the easy-listening charts with its simplistic opening on the digital piano of two chords rocking simultaneously as Streisand passionately hums the melody. The ‘’Mmm’’ continues to parallel the accompaniment but soon becomes the first syllable of ‘’Mem-or-ies, like the co-lours of my mind’’. Soon enveloped by sweeping strings the song is swamped with reminisces and reflection of what could have been.
A Roaring Success
All of Streisand’s performances have been a roaring success. Her public adored her with Broadway and West End concert tickets selling out in minutes. Her career has been a melee of nominations for ‘Best, Better and Best Ever’’.
Even up to 2012 Streisand was re-inventing herself as an executive producer in the film ‘The Hollywood Reporter’. This is a lady who languishes under the sign of the bull. She makes no bones about her ‘no-nonsense’ approach to life. She is used to getting her own way – this Streisand bull is clearly in charge!
